This quarter got off to a little bit of a slow start, I thought. January and February didn't have a lot that wowed me, and then March released a whole bunch of good songs all at once and I haven't had time to fully determine which ones will end up as long-term favorites yet. So it might be kind of funny to come back and reread this in a year, because it's totally possible I'll guess wrong.

Here's my best guess, though:

I went to see Taemin (from SHINee) in Chicago this weekend on his (solo) Ephemeral Gaze tour, one of the best Valentine's Day presents my spouse has ever given me.

I had enough time sitting around hotels, airports, and on planes going home the next day that this turned out kinda long and full of links. 😅 Read more... )

I was arguing with myself about what to include in this post to the point that I decided to just do five each for boy groups and girl groups. Thanks as always to the mods at [community profile] paradisediner for making it so easy to check out new music (and remember when it came out for these compilation posts)!

Last month, I was reminded of the existence of RateYourMusic and decided to experiment with it as a way to keep track of my K-pop listening. Here's my 2024 K-pop list so far (mostly title tracks, with notes).

I'm back home and back to reliable internet, yay!

Because of the trip, I'm a little behind on going through the New Music Mondays posts on [community profile] paradisediner, but I managed to check out enough songs to find five that have really stood out to me as being favorites of the first three months of 2024.Read more... )

Here is January to June.

[community profile] paradisediner has a poll going to determine favorite K-pop releases of the second half of 2023, and the choice of number one was a LOT easier for me than the first half of 2023. Taemin's "Guilty", of course!

Here's my thoughts on the other contenders.

I was in the mood to ramble, and while casting about for something to ramble about, I saw this poll about favorite K-pop releases of the first half of 2023 at [community profile] paradisediner and couldn't decide which three to pick, so I'm going to ramble about that and see if it helps me decide.

A friend of mine has spent the last month getting me into the K-pop group SEVENTEEN, because my MDL watchlist wasn't already enough of a mess of partially watched shows without starting to stan a group that has seven years of variety show content to catch up on, lol. Not to mention all the music videos, choreography videos, concerts, solo projects...

My friend was laughing at me a little bit for going pretty much from "Seventeen... that's a K-pop group, right?" to getting grumpy about bad Western camera angles in their recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel in less than a month, but I'm still very far from an expert and have probably only listened to about... a third? of their songs. Give or take a bit. I've been focusing the most on songs with accompanying choreography videos or dance practices, since I'm a sucker for dance and Seventeen not only has an outstanding performance line, but also has no real dance holes despite the group's large size and a lot of very fun, creative choreography, much of which is done by Hoshi, the leader of the performance line, in collaboration with the other members.

Anyway, despite being extremely late to this party, I thought I'd throw some links out into the ether in case anyone else might be interested. At the very least, it might be fun to come back in a year or two to see if/how my tastes have evolved after I've done more catching up on the aforementioned seven years of content. 😅

Since getting into CDramas like Nirvana in Fire, Word of Honor, and The Untamed during lockdown last year, I've also been exploring more Chinese music. I started out mostly with drama soundtracks, but more recently YouTube's algorithm has been sending me clips from different Chinese singing shows and competitions.

One of the singers I've become a fan of as a result is Hua Chenyu, called Hua Hua by his fans. I thought it would be fun to write a post sharing some of the different songs and performances I've enjoyed. He has a great voice and amazing stage presence in live performances, and I especially enjoy how he blends different genres of music in his original songs and arrangements.

Quick caveat: I'm an American who doesn't speak any Chinese except the small handful of words I've picked up from CDramas, so I've done my best to find accurate information, but please let me know if you notice any mistakes.
